a registry editor, password resetter, and a desktop that looks like Windows XP so you will feel comfortable maneuvering. You will have a whole bunch of cool tools that you don't have in the XP Recovery Console. This is good for you because it has many more tools on it that on the XP Recovery Console CD, does not care about your Administrator passwords and you will not have to futz around in your BIOS if any afflicted system has SATA drives - Hiren's can deal with that. I am going to recommend you use Hiren's boot CD (it will also go on a USB flash/thumb stick/drive). Would you like instructions for how to run the chkdsk with Hiren's or are you going to pursue these other options? Hirens Boot CD (the old version) is a good choice - and from that you will also be able to (usually) navigate your system if you want to copy off some files and things to another media. unless you set the system up in advance and most people have never done that. If you have not already in advance configured your system to boot into the Recovery Console you may find that even if you were to boot into the RC you will not get far or past the Admin prompt.

It is usually easy to fix by running a chkdsk with error correction (chkdsk /r) from a command prompt but you are going to have to boot on something in order to do that. I got windows xp on usb stick, and when i tried to do a recovery it failed, (basically said to put a windows xp cd in, but i had my stick), ive tried reinstalling windows but i got again blue screen : Driver_irql_not_less_or_equal jraid.sys error.
